Make It Your Own - How To Start A Home Practice

Writer: DanaDana

I’m writing this post in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a challenging and emotional time for everyone. No doubt, we are all missing the support and community of our public yoga classes. But in this strange and difficult time, we are being called to find our sense of security and peace from within. For me personally, a consistent home practice has truly been the most insightful and joyous aspect of my yoga journey. But I know it can be challenging to begin. Here are some simple tips to help you cultivate your own practice in the comfort of home:

Roll out your mat.

Really. It’s that simple. A home yoga practice begins with intention, and it’s true that just showing up for yourself can be one of the biggest obstacles to overcome. Find a clear space in your home (or perhaps on the patio if it’s a nice day!), roll out your mat, and begin.

Practice what you know… or find a guide.

If you’re not sure what to practice once you step on your mat, simply come back to what you know. It doesn’t have to be complicated or fancy. Lay down or take a comfortable seat and simply begin to notice your breath. Even if you do nothing else, taking those few moments to bring your attention inward is a beautiful and complete yoga practice in and of itself.

If you’re looking for more, remember that there are numerous resources available (oftentimes for free) online. A simple search on YouTube will produce a massive library of yoga flows you can follow along to. The Yoga With Adriene channel is wonderful place to begin.

Finally, release yourself from expectation.

Do you have an idea in your head of what a home yoga practice is supposed to look like? If so, let go of any expectations you have set for yourself. The beauty of a home practice is that you get to tailor it exactly to your needs. It doesn’t need to last an hour. It doesn’t have to make sense to anyone except you.

I'm here to remind you that you are your own greatest teacher. Everything you need, already lies within.

Peace and love.

Namaste.

Hi fellow yogis! Boho Beautiful has a free YouTube channel for yoga, Pilates, and meditation! there’s some prenatal yoga from her pregnancy and lots of other side stuff to explore! Her and her partner wanted to make yoga accessible to everyone so highly recommend! Disclaimer she is a more advanced teacher to some degree, but her partner has some more beginner friendly flows. Also they are all 15-30 mins Which I find helpful as a student!
